Sunshine

Feeling the warmth of the sun on my face

takes me back to another time and place
when I didn’t need to run every race,
where life was enjoyed at a slower pace.

Bright, sunny days in the state of my birth
were so rare that they filled my world with mirth.
In my mind, I then equated their worth
to gems most desirable here on Earth.

And now that I’m under the desert sun,
once again, I’m finding that I’ve begun
to desire to leave many tasks undone
when sunshine incites me just to have fun.

Though I can’t concede every sunny day
to the child inside who demands to play,
there are times, her arguments, I must weigh.
Today, I may let her have the last say!
