There’s an ache in my heart
ever since we’ve been apart.
But if I hadn’t left,
every cell would be bereft.
I’ve accepted the cost
of the many things I’ve lost.
But when new love comes in,
will I lose what’s always been?
For somewhere there is someone
waiting just for me,
aware of a partnership
that soon will come to be.
And in my head, I understand
that I’ll have to set you free,
but I struggle in my aching heart
with how to let go of “we….”
I know I’ll always love you
and you’ll ever care for me….
But when another does arrive,
will the love you have for me survive?
What happens to most human hearts
when they are one of three?
There are some hearts like mine
with a very rare design:
many doors, varied keys
held by different designees.
When creative and free,
love is flowing like the sea;
from my center, it pours
and caresses different shores.
Yet, in a world that values
exclusivity,
there are a selective few
who’ve learned to let me be.
And I’m forever grateful for
those I love who’ve come to see
that a heart that houses many rooms
is what you will get with me.
Just know I’ll always love you,
even though you’re far from me.
And when the other one arrives,
all the love that’s only yours survives.
I pray you have a human heart
that thrives as one of three!
