The Heart of The Child

A wistful feeling emerges each year

as soon as the month of December draws near.
Surrounded by all of the holiday flurry,
I close my eyes, and the image is blurry.
Then Christmas appears as it used to be,
as seen through the heart of the child in me.

I used to scramble about in a daze
for all of those years when it was quite the craze
for Christmas to be about outward impressions.
But now, refusing to make those concessions,
I’d rather be present and worry-free
to honor the heart of the child in me.

Most all desire to relive days gone by
when visions of Santa and reindeer that fly
produced all those magical feelings of pleasure
that we, as children, embrace beyond measure.
But though it’s unspoken, adults agree
to discount the things only hearts can see.

One day, I went on a quest for the truth,
which seemed very clear in the days of my youth.
My goal was that limiting lies be corrected:
I’d get in touch with the child I’d neglected
and clear out my mind of malign debris —
unconscious beliefs of society.

I then embarked on a journey within
to drown out the noise of the holiday din.
The code to unlock how to disregard reason
and find true wonder each holiday season,
though blocked from perception through eyes that see,
is clear to the child that I used to be.

Once all the meaningless chatter had ceased,
the old misconceptions were quickly released.
My uncluttered mind found it easy to fashion
the gentle thoughts that arise from compassion.
Self-love and acceptance became the key
that opened the heart of the child in me!
