Human Protocol

Love can catch you by surprise;

it grabs hold of your heart.
You open your eyes
and realize
that feelings inside,
which, at first, you denied,
were there from the very start.

Grief, at times, sneaks up on you
and brings you to your knees.
From out of the blue,
it strikes anew
when feelings of loss,
once again, come across
and trigger a brief reprise.

Anger rises and explodes
if feelings aren’t addressed.
It spoils and erodes
expressive modes
that help to build trust
as our fears are discussed
and doubt of our worth confessed.

Present in our mortal clay,
compassion’s meant to grow.
It comes into play
and finds its way
to those we befriend,
but to self, we suspend
what Spirit intends we know.

‘Til the final curtain call,
emotions rule our lives.
Compassion for all
is protocol
in order that we
traverse time to walk free
where only the love survives.
