Five Simple Words

Don’t leave words unspoken

that could heal a heart that’s broken.
A better time may never come,
so speak your truth and don’t succumb
to the fear that lurks inside
and smothers honesty with pride.

Whatever comes to pass,
continuing to walk on glass
creates unnecessary stress
and drains the power you possess
to heal a heart once broken
by all that was left unspoken.

What if he turns away?
What happens if she doesn’t stay?
The life you’re living will go on;
the dark of night will break with dawn.
But better still, you’ll melt the frost
that caused your power to be lost.

For when you leave your truth unspoken,
you will find the promise broken
to yourself will rot and mold
and fester inside uncontrolled.
The wound that silence sired
will leave your power mired
in a trap made up of choices you lament.
But all of this is easy to prevent!

Speak your truth, but clothed in kindness.
Know that it is key
to never hesitate to add
with authenticity
the magic words that heal the heart:
“I’m sorry; please forgive me.”

And if you speak these words with feeling,
I can guarantee
that, in the long run, you’ll survive
whatever comes to be.
For power, which is lost through fear,
returns for just the fee
of uttering five simple words
to set another free.
