A Venture of Heart

How could I not have seen it before?

Was I simply too young
or was I just blind
to the spark that was there from the start?
It illuminates where
there’s a venture of heart….

Pasternak wrote of longing and war,
and his characters clung
to hope that they’d find
resolution to end pain and strife.
What he brilliantly penned
still pertains to this life.

Doctor Zhivago opened the door
to a question that hung
in back of my mind:
Is the verse that appears in the dark
a result of our years
or produced by…a spark?

Love and desire were there at the core
of the seed from which sprung
a blossom that shined.
Like the Queen of the Night’s precious bloom,
in the absence of light,
she emits her perfume.
