Who Am I To Me?

In the heart-space of my mother,

I was all that she had dreamed;
in me, her unclaimed talents gleamed
for all the world to see.
She gave me many options
that she did not possess
and prayed that God, my life, would bless
for all eternity.

In the loving eyes of Daddy,
I was born a precious pearl;
he taught his independent girl
to be both kind and strong.
From where he’s now residing
with his enlightened view,
he sends advice: “To self, be true
by singing your own song!”

But who am I to me?

When will the knowing dawn?
How can this fledgling swan
embody all she’s meant to be?

Under this somber sky,
despite my being awake,
the choices I must make
often break my heart in pieces….
The doubting never ceases
when the road that lies ahead,
though visible to the dead,
to my eyes, is not in view.

So what am I to do?

Who am I to me:

Daddy’s girl or Mother’s second chance?
Am I just a girl who loves to dance,
or could I be a fusion of the three?

Could it be that I am simply…me?
