Shade Tree

As the month of May approaches,

nostalgia encroaches
on the presence
that most often holds my focus.

With some mental hocus-pocus,
I free my inner essence,
and a shade tree
from another era lures me….

For the spell that it once cast

holds a feeling unsurpassed
by any other work of nature
I’ve beheld.

And no matter where I’ve dwelled
or the proper nomenclature
of that shade tree
in a land across the sea,
as the magic month of May
’rounds the bend, a whimsical fay
does entice me to recall
that time and place
(of effortless grace)
when I was but a child, meek and small,
who played beneath a shade tree
in a land across the sea.

May remains a time for me

when lust for life can set me free,
regardless of my age
or where I live.

For at heart, I’m still that child
who, by nature, was beguiled.
From my current stage,
there’s much I’ve yet to give.

And I know just where to find
all I need to be aligned:
Soul and self are ever in key
in the shade of that magical tree.
