Battle of the Ages

Whether at the end of middle age

or in the twilight years,
the observing self, serene and sage,
her wisdom, volunteers.

From her lookout on the other side
of bright yet weary eyes,
she delights in youth unqualified,
which human beings prize.

Yet she also understands the needs
of Higher Self’s design,
and in knowing them, she always leads
to where the self can shine.

When both are livened by a surge
of energetic charm,
once ego and observer merge,
there’s no cause for alarm.

Although her mortal counterpart
is lured by earthly lust,
the learned one, now ruled by heart,
is wise, benign, and just.

What would have been a painful fray
between the flesh and soul
emerges as a sweet ballet;
each knows its given role.

As insight conquers human doubt
and calms the mortal mind,
then the latter part of life plays out
with Soul and self aligned.
