This is something you should know:
When you grow, you change,
and as you change, you grow.
Even when it hurts a bit,
change is still a perfect fit!
The favorite shoes you used to wear
no longer are the comfy pair
they were a year ago
since feet will always grow.
The second nap you used to need,
the baby’s book your dad would read
to you at bedtime every night
are now routines that don’t feel right.
And as you continue to grow,
some of the things you used to know
that made you feel secure and warm
will change into another form.
Your mommy reads THE CAT IN THE HAT
instead of the baby’s book you’d pat
with the fingers of your tiny hands.
Then you’re exploring magical lands
of flying carpets and dancing dishes
where elves and genies can grant your wishes!
Even the verses in your books
(that once were stored in hidden nooks)
have grown up and now have different looks.
The pairs of lines that always rhymed
(like church bells that forever chimed)
will be heard less often as you grow.
And there is more that you should know:
things and people come and go;
frozen creeks, in spring, will flow;
daffodils will push through snow;
time that once moved fast will slow.
It’s true that as you change, you grow!
But also know that this is so:
Just as water mostly flows
in one direction day to day,
it can flow the other way
if Mother Nature’s temper blows.
When life is tossing you to and fro
and you feel sad and blue,
remember, this is also true:
Change is sometimes sent to HELP you grow!
