The Years Between

The poetry of yesteryear

would usually bring about a tear,
but young me often didn’t know
the reason why it had touched me so.

While reading Dante’s mystic rhyme,
my memories of another time
and love that I had yet to know
would cause my curious self to grow.

I don’t recall my thinking then
of having my own desire to pen
the verses that I’ve come to write,
the thoughts that keep me awake at night….

But now I have begun to see
that, even back then, a part of me
had knowledge of a higher goal,
a window into my heart and soul.

The many, hectic years between
the opening act and later scene
in JA’s play — this lifetime’s theme —
(like remnants of a forgotten dream)
provided opportunities,
resulting in broader unities
that crossed the bounds of time and space
to put some disparate parts in place.

Today the skills of lifetimes past
and purposes higher and too vast
for my dull mind to comprehend
have come together, so I transcend
the fears of ego, blame, and guilt
in order to climb the walls I’ve built
to keep me safe within my shell.
What happens next, only time will tell!
